Abstract
Digitization of information is indispensable in our today’s life as for example the use of computers and smartphones. In modern production this trend is continued through Industrie 4.0 and the creation of “digital twins” of products to be manufactured.
The laser-based additive manufacturing is predestined to carry out the new way of production in perfection since a fully digital processing chain can be achieved: the design of the part starts in a CAD system, followed by slicing into virtual layers, and finally transmitting the digital data to the laser machine to manufacture it. The technology processor of the machine adds the processing parameters.
To all additive manufacturing technologies is in common that they build up parts always layer by layer independent of the material and size of the part. However, different technologies need to be applied whose potential will be addressed in this lecture.
Biography
Dr. Stefan Kaierle studied electrical engineering and pursued with his PhD in mechanical engineering at RWTH Aachen University. In 1998 he entered the Fraunhofer ILT as a department head for system technology. In 2012, he moved to Laser Zentrum Hannover e.V. (LZH) and assumed responsibility for the department of Materials and Processes. In the same year he became lecturer at the Leibniz University of Hannover LUH. Since 2018, Stefan Kaierle is Executive Board Member of the LZH.
He has been the President of the European Laser Institute (ELI) for 10 years (2003-2013) and is member of the Board of Directors of the Laser Institute of America (LIA) since 2013. Since 2014 Stefan Kaierle is Member of the Board of Stakeholders of the European Technology Platform Photonics 21. Besides numerous committee involvements he has been chairman and board member of many international conferences. Since 2011 he is Executive Editor in Chief of NATURE Journal LIGHT: Science & Applications. His academic achievements have been honored by the Laser Institute of America (Fellow), the European Laser Institute (Fellow) and the CIOMP, Chinese Academy of Sciences (Honorary Professor).
